The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) of the ISM Institute is based on a monthly survey of purchasing managers. An index value above 50 indicates expansive economic activity, while the current index value for the US service sector has fallen to 49.6. This is a bad sign for the current economic outlook, as the US service sector accounts for almost 80% of gross domestic product.
