Increasingly rising asking rents in Germany

The asking rents for existing apartments advertised in 2022 were around 4.0% higher than the previous year's rents nationwide. According to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), these averaged EUR 9.66/m². The increase affects both urban and rural areas. The BBSR confirms that the rental housing markets are caught between increased demand and a slowdown in new construction and transaction activity. It is to be expected that this tension will continue to affect rental prices in Germany in the future.
