At the end of 2023, FINVIA was already making waves with the expansion of its range of services with FINVIA Sports. The cooperation with the former professional footballer and manager of the German national team, Oliver Bierhoff, and the more than 90 investment experts of the family office puts competitive athletes at the center of their support for the first time and puts their unique needs at the heart of their services.
But that's not all.
In addition to innovative family office services, the partnership has also given a real boost to the sports asset class. By opening it up to clients of all kinds, they benefit from new opportunities and unique chances to profitably expand their portfolios.
Competitive sport has long since conquered the world. Whether soccer, basketball, ice hockey, tennis or golf - players and clubs are constantly growing. For example, salaries in professional soccer in America and Europe have risen by well over 100% in the past 15 years and clubs have also increased significantly in value.
But not only that.
Closely linked to this progress, the entire industry is experiencing a significant upswing. New business models are emerging around stadiums, venues and events, and the trade in merchandising products and licensing rights is booming. For example, while the broadcasting of relevant soccer matches was still in the hands of public broadcasters at the beginning of the 2000s, more and more streaming services are now participating in the market.
Nevertheless, this development has remained virtually unknown to private investors, particularly in German-speaking countries. Yet the sports sector offers them significant advantages both in combination with and in contrast to other asset classes.
Few things unite people around the world as much as a passion for sport. Whether during periods of prosperity or drastic economic crises, consumers' need for entertainment and solidarity in this sector remains virtually unchanged. Accordingly, it impresses with a high degree of resilience, especially in times of major market distortions. A fact that makes a targeted investment in this sector particularly interesting. Implementation not only opens up new opportunities for appealing returns, but also for systematic risk diversification.
The Sports Finance Fund of our US cooperation partner Aliya Capital Partners made a first start at the beginning of 2023. Anchored in private debt, it focused on the interim financing of US professional athletes (NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL). Many clubs do not pay the majority of their guaranteed salaries until the end of their planned contract term, which has led to a high demand for interim financing available at short notice. A need that is met by the fund.
This is a model that has already been tested by the provider over a period of two years. The result: more than 173 loans at an average interest rate of 16.3 % offered investors an annualized gross return of 30.8 %.
In the next step, FINVIA Sports expanded its offering in December 2023 to include the allocation of a bearer bond as part of the securitization of player transfer receivables. This is also an investment that belongs to the private debt segment. This was carried out via Score Capital AG, a leading financing specialist for soccer transfer services with more than 19 years of experience and over 650 transactions.
Following the successful launch of our range of products and the extremely positive reception from our clients, we are currently offering a new opportunity for investors of all kinds: the Arctos Sports Fund II. This fund invests in sports franchises in North America and Europe. In particular, it invests in US sports franchises and envisages 15 - 20 investments in sports companies.

About the author
Mathias Jauch
Together with FINVIA, he developed FINVIA Sports, which is specially tailored to professional athletes and their needs.
He himself had a promising career as an athlete at a young age, which came to an abrupt end due to injuries. Instead, the world of finance opened new doors for him and he worked at HypoVereinsbank/UniCredit in various positions for over 10 years. Most recently, his focus was on wealth management, where he looked after the wealth of entrepreneurs and professional athletes alike.
All this experience ultimately led to the founding of FINVIA Sports together with Torsten Murke and Oliver Bierhoff.
